Now a painter, Libby Mathews has studied modern dance and printmaking. This combination of interests gives her work its rhythm and visual strength. A professional studio and plein-aire artist, Mathews makes her home in the North Georgia Mountains where she has been both a resident Fellow and Instructor at the Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences.
Traveling to learn, instruct, and paint on location, Mathews infuses her paintings with an active spirit, knowledge and awareness of the intentions in her mind in the face of nature. Canvases depicting and interpreting sun lit scenes from Tuscany, Coastal Georgia, the West, the Appalachians and her little mountain lake cabin give testament to her love of the landscape and nature. Her landscapes with their reflections, illuminations and shadows show the spirit of a place and of Libby.
